FX has renewed Welcome to Wrexham for three additional seasons, extending the docuseries through Season 8. The multi-season pickup is a rare move in television and is expected to keep the series on air through at least 2029 across FXX and Hulu, with international availability on Disney+.

The large renewal signals continued confidence in the series, which has become one of FX’s most successful unscripted titles. Multi-season orders of this scale are uncommon and typically reserved for shows that deliver consistent audience engagement, strong critical reception, and long-term franchise potential. In this case, Welcome to Wrexham has benefited from a combination of compelling storytelling and the real-world success of Wrexham AFC, which has drawn global attention in recent years.

The announcement comes as the show prepares to return for its fifth season this May, with the first two episodes airing on FXX and Hulu at 9 p.m. ET. New episodes from the eight-episode season will then be released weekly, continuing the show’s established rollout format.

“When we launched Welcome to Wrexham, we never imagined the impact it would have on the club and the town while creating one of TV’s most successful and beloved docuseries,” said Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment. “This three-season renewal is a testament to the vision of Rob and Ryan and the enduring connection they’ve built with fans around the world.”

Co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, also highlighted the unusual nature of the renewal. “A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the groundbreaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC,” they said, pointing to both the production team and the club’s ongoing success as key factors behind the decision.

The series follows the journey of Wrexham AFC, one of the oldest professional football clubs in the world, after its purchase by McElhenney and Reynolds in 2020. What began as an underdog story has quickly evolved into a global phenomenon, with the club achieving three consecutive promotions – a historic feat in English football – while attracting a rapidly growing international fanbase.

Season 5 will continue to document the club’s push toward the Premier League, capturing both on-field performance and behind-the-scenes challenges, including squad changes, financial pressures, and increasing expectations as the team climbs the football pyramid. The series also continues to highlight the development of the Wrexham AFC Women’s Team, adding another dimension to the club’s broader story.

The continued success of Welcome to Wrexham reflects a broader trend in sports documentary programming, where real-world narratives and long-form storytelling have become a major driver of streaming engagement. Shows that combine ongoing storylines with real-life stakes are particularly well-positioned for longevity, especially when tied to globally recognisable figures and teams.

Welcome to Wrexham Season 5 premieres May 14, with Seasons 6-8 expected to follow through 2029 on FXX, Hulu, and Disney+ internationally.
