HBO has renewed Rooster for a second season, confirming the comedy’s strong early performance just one month after its debut. The pickup follows an impressive launch, with the first four episodes averaging 5.8 million viewers in the U.S., making it the network’s most-watched freshman comedy in over a decade.
The early renewal reflects HBO’s confidence in the series, which quickly established itself as a standout within the network’s comedy lineup. Strong initial viewership, combined with positive audience reception, often plays a key role in these fast renewal decisions – particularly for premium networks that prioritise engagement and long-term potential over traditional ratings alone.
Rooster stars Steve Carell, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses. Set on a college campus, the series follows an author navigating a complex relationship with his daughter while balancing the personal and professional challenges that come with his role. The show blends character-driven storytelling with a mix of humour and emotional depth, a formula that has proven successful for similar projects led by Lawrence and Tarses.
HBO executives have highlighted the show’s strong reception as a major factor behind the renewal. “It’s been heartening to feel the audience embrace Rooster, as we did when we first saw Steve, Bill and Matt bring this character to life,” said Amy Gravitt, EVP of HBO Programming. “We’re looking forward to seeing what Ludlow’s Spring Semester has in store for this incredible comedy ensemble.”
Clancy Collins White of Warner Bros. Television echoed that sentiment, describing the series as “a heartfelt, endearing” production and praising the creative team for delivering a compelling and well-balanced show led by an experienced cast.
The ensemble also includes Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley and Lauren Tsai, all contributing to the show’s strong on-screen dynamic.
With the renewal now confirmed, Rooster joins a growing list of HBO comedies receiving early pickups, a trend that reflects the network’s focus on building stable, returning franchises in an increasingly competitive streaming environment.
Rooster Season 2 is slated to premiere in 2027 on HBO.
