Did You Know? – Missing: Dead or Alive?

Behind the Scenes: A Rare Look Inside Real Investigations

Missing: Dead or Alive? takes viewers deep inside the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) Missing Persons Unit in Columbia, South Carolina. The Netflix true-crime docuseries offers unprecedented access to real investigators, including Sergeant Vicki Rains, Captain Heidi Jackson, and Investigator J.P. Smith. Filming for Season 1 began in late 2021 and continued through much of 2022, with crews following officers around the clock, even during off-duty hours, to capture the urgency, emotion, and unpredictability of missing-persons work.

The production was handled with the cooperation of the RCSD, who had previously appeared on A&E’s Live PD from 2016 to 2020. This made them one of the most media-familiar law enforcement agencies in the country and provided the foundation for a smooth collaboration with Netflix’s production team.

Filming Locations and Authentic Atmosphere

All episodes were filmed on location in and around Columbia, South Carolina, from the RCSD headquarters to nearby rural search zones, residential neighborhoods, and local landmarks. The choice to film entirely within the county adds to the show’s authenticity and helps viewers see the real environments investigators work in daily.

Cinematically, Missing: Dead or Alive? blends the procedural energy of The First 48 with the intimate tension of Cops. Its documentary-style visuals emphasize natural lighting, real dispatch audio, and genuine emotional moments. Viewers often note the balance between professionalism and humanity in the team’s interactions with victims’ families, a hallmark that distinguishes it from other true-crime programs.

Real Cases, Real Stakes

Each of the first season’s four episodes focus on a different disappearance investigated by RCSD between 2019 and 2021. Among the cases are the mysterious vanishing of a lottery winner, a teenage girl’s disappearance, and a mother-and-daughter case that kept the department searching for weeks. Every case documented in the series is genuine, with real evidence, timelines, and outcomes – though certain segments are edited to preserve privacy or maintain the flow of storytelling.

While some viewers questioned whether elements might be dramatized, investigators have confirmed that the series reflects real procedures, emotions, and leads, captured as they unfolded.

Reception, Renewal, and What’s Next

Following its debut on May 10, 2023, Missing: Dead or Alive? quickly climbed Netflix’s Top 10 lists, ranking in the global charts and reaching No. 2 in the U.S. Its strong viewership and positive reception from fans of realistic law-enforcement storytelling led Netflix to renew the show for a second season in September 2023.

Season 2 is scheduled to release on November 24, 2025.

We’re currently monitoring the show to find out whether it will return for Season 3.
