Netflix has cancelled The Waterfront after one season.

The decision not to move forward with Season 2 comes as somewhat of a surprise, given the drama’s solid performance and the fact that it was once thought to be a likely candidate for renewal.

The eight-episode series debuted on June 19, 2025, and performed strongly, spending five weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for English-language series, including a rare three consecutive weeks at No. 1. In its peak week, it drew 11.6 million views. By comparison, fellow freshman dramas Ransom Canyon and Forever – both recently renewed – spent four weeks in the Top 10 with lower peak viewership.

Despite those numbers, insiders suggest Netflix weighed other factors, including completion rates and internal cost-performance metrics, which may not have met renewal thresholds. It reportedly outperformed other Netflix dramas cancelled after one season (Pulse and The Residence), making the decision even more unexpected.

Created by Kevin Williamson, The Waterfront starred Holt McCallany, Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist, and Maria Bello. Set in Havenport, North Carolina, it followed the powerful Buckley family as their fishing empire began to collapse. Patriarch Harlan Buckley (McCallany) battled health issues while his wife Belle (Bello) and son Cane (Weary) struggled to keep control. Meanwhile, daughter Bree (Benoist), in recovery and fighting for custody of her son, became ensnared in a relationship that threatened the family’s fragile future.

Responding to the cancellation, Williamson said:

“While I’m say the Buckleys won’t be back for Season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1. It was one of the best experiences of my life!”

With the cancellation, the Buckley family’s story ends after just one season, despite strong initial reception and a 68% Rotten Tomatoes score.
