Netflix is staying in the game with Running Point. The streamer has renewed the Kate Hudson-led comedy for a third season after the series continued posting strong global viewership numbers across its first two installments.

The renewal further cements Running Point as one of Netflix’s more successful comedy launches of the past two years and marks another major streaming hit for executive producers Mindy Kaling, David Stassen, and Ike Barinholtz.

According to Netflix, Season 1 debuted at number one on the platform’s Global Top 10 chart after premiering in February 2025 and reached the Top 10 in 89 countries. The show later ranked among Netflix’s top 15 most-watched series worldwide during the first half of 2025. Season 2 has continued that momentum, remaining on the Global Top 10 chart since its release while also driving renewed interest in the first season.

Combined, the series has now surpassed 60 million views across its first two seasons – an impressive benchmark for a comedy in an era when drama and thriller series often dominate streaming charts.

The strong international performance likely played a major role in Netflix’s quick renewal decision. Comedy can sometimes struggle to travel globally compared to action-driven genres, but Running Point appears to have found a broad audience thanks to its mix of sports-world satire, family dysfunction, and workplace comedy.

The series stars Hudson as Isla Gordon, a woman unexpectedly thrust into leadership of the fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball franchise. Initially underestimated and viewed as little more than a placeholder executive, Isla spends the series attempting to prove she deserves control of the team while navigating internal power struggles, media scrutiny, and increasingly complicated family dynamics.

Season 2 raised those stakes considerably as Isla attempted to stabilize the franchise after a public scandal, only to face mounting pressure from her brother Cam, played by Justin Theroux, who quietly maneuvers to reclaim his former position within the organization.
That blend of family drama and sports-industry satire has become central to the show’s appeal.

While basketball provides the backdrop, Running Point operates more as a comedy about power, legacy, and public image than a traditional sports series. The franchise setting also allows the show to explore celebrity culture, business politics, and media pressure in ways that resonate beyond the sports world itself.

From an industry standpoint, the renewal reflects Netflix’s continued investment in recognizable star-driven comedies. Hudson’s involvement gave the project immediate visibility, while Kaling’s established relationship with the streamer helped position the show as a priority launch from the outset.

The series also arrives during a period when sports-adjacent scripted programming is becoming increasingly popular across television and streaming. Shows centered around teams, athletes, and sports executives offer natural opportunities for workplace comedy, interpersonal conflict, and aspirational storytelling—all while benefiting from audiences already invested in sports culture.

Production on Season 3 will continue in Los Angeles, where Netflix has been expanding its production footprint. The streamer noted that Running Point joins a growing slate of high-profile productions filming in the city, including upcoming seasons of The Lincoln Lawyer and Nobody Wants This.

The ensemble cast, including Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, and Chet Hanks, has also become an increasingly important part of the show’s identity, helping balance the central executive storyline with broader comedic chaos inside the organization.

Running Point Season 3 is slated to release in spring 2027 on Netflix.
