Netflix is staying in business with Big Mistakes. The streaming platform has renewed the breakout comedy-thriller for a second season while simultaneously expanding its relationship with creator and star Dan Levy through a new first-look television deal.
The renewal arrives as another major vote of confidence in Levy’s growing post-Schitt’s Creek career and further positions Big Mistakes as one of Netflix’s emerging comedy franchises. While the streamer did not release specific viewership figures, the quick pickup and broader creative agreement strongly suggest the series performed well internally for the platform.
Levy confirmed that work on the second season is already underway.
“Very grateful and beyond excited to continue the Big Mistakes adventure and my creative collaboration with Netflix,” Levy said in a statement. “Season 2 is already in the works and it’s going to be WILD. I can’t wait to get it out there to everyone as soon as humanly possible.”
Netflix executives appear equally enthusiastic about deepening the partnership. Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s Vice President of Comedy Series in the U.S., praised Levy’s creative voice while announcing the renewal.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Dan and bring more of his wonderfully funny and compelling stories to life,” Pakosta said. “Big Mistakes is the most recent example of Dan’s singular voice and vision connecting with audiences around the world.”
The series marked Levy’s return to television as both creator and leading man following the enormous success of Schitt’s Creek, which became a global phenomenon after finding a second life on Netflix
. That show famously swept the comedy categories at the 2020 Emmy Awards and helped establish Levy as one of television’s most sought-after multi-hyphenate creators.
With Big Mistakes, Levy moved into darker comedic territory while still maintaining the emotional awkwardness and character-driven humor that became central to his earlier work.
The series follows siblings Nicky and Morgan, played by Levy and Taylor Ortega, who accidentally become entangled with organized crime after a botched theft tied to their dying grandmother. What begins as a desperate family scheme spirals into increasingly dangerous criminal assignments as the pair repeatedly stumble their way deeper into chaos.
The blend of crime-thriller tension and dysfunctional family comedy has helped the series stand out in Netflix’s crowded original lineup. Tonally, the show occupies a space somewhere between farce and suspense, leaning into incompetent protagonists forced to navigate situations wildly beyond their capabilities.
The supporting ensemble also contributed heavily to the show’s breakout response, particularly performances from Laurie Metcalf and Elizabeth Perkins. Their involvement gave the series additional prestige credibility while complementing the chaotic energy of Levy and Ortega’s central dynamic.
From an industry standpoint, the renewal reflects Netflix’s ongoing strategy of investing heavily in creator-driven comedy brands. In the streaming era, recognizable creative voices have become increasingly valuable, especially those capable of attracting loyal audiences across multiple projects. Levy fits that model perfectly after the enduring success of Schitt’s Creek and the positive reception to his 2024 feature directorial debut, Good Grief.
The first-look agreement also suggests Netflix sees Levy as a long-term partner rather than simply the star of a single successful show. Similar deals have become common among streamers seeking to secure top creative talent amid fierce competition for original programming.
Production on Season 2 is expected to return to New Jersey, which has increasingly become a major filming hub for Netflix productions. The streamer noted that Big Mistakes joins a growing slate of high-profile projects shooting in the region, including upcoming films and series currently in development.
For viewers, the renewal means the chaotic criminal spiral facing Nicky and Morgan is far from over. Given how Season 1 escalated both the danger and absurdity surrounding the siblings, the promise that Season 2 will become even “wilder” suggests the series may continue leaning further into its blend of escalating panic and dark comedy.
Big Mistakes Season 2 is slated to release in 2027 on Netflix.
