Interesting things to know about Dune: Prophecy as we head into Season 2.
A New Chapter in the Dune Universe
The sands of Arrakis are shifting once again. Production is underway for Season 2 of Dune: Prophecy, the ambitious prequel series set 10,000 years before the rise of Paul Atreides. Created by showrunner Alison Schapker (Westworld, Fringe), the series expands the legendary universe crafted by Frank Herbert, diving deep into the origins of the Bene Gesserit, the enigmatic sisterhood that would one day shape the destiny of the Imperium.
Season 1, which earned four Emmy nominations, established the show as a cornerstone of HBO’s growing sci-fi slate. It explored the political intrigue, religious ideology, and power struggles that defined the earliest days of the Dune saga.
Season 2 Filming Locations and Production Scale
Season 2 is an international production of enormous scale, with filming currently taking place across Hungary, Jordan, and Spain, a combination that promises sweeping desert visuals and intricate set design reminiscent of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films. Hungary’s Origo Studios once again serves as a primary hub, while Jordan’s Wadi Rum desert doubles for the ancient worlds of the Imperium. Spain’s diverse terrain brings new planetary environments to life, expanding the show’s visual palette.
The series is co-produced by HBO and Legendary Television, with Legendary also overseeing the Dune film franchise, ensuring narrative cohesion across mediums.
Returning and New Cast Members
Returning cast members include Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, and Shalom Brune-Franklin, reprising their pivotal roles from Season 1. New additions to the ensemble bring even more star power to the second chapter:
- Indira Varma (The Night Manager, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One)
- Ashley Walters (Top Boy)
- Tom Hollander (The White Lotus, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans)
These casting choices hint at expanded political and spiritual conflicts within the burgeoning Bene Gesserit order.
Inspired by “Sisterhood of Dune”
Dune: Prophecy draws its inspiration from “Sisterhood of Dune”, the 2012 novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, which chronicles the formation of the Bene Gesserit following humanity’s war against thinking machines. The story explores how two Harkonnen sisters fight against external forces and internal corruption to establish the sisterhood’s foundations, a story rich in intrigue, sacrifice, and philosophical tension.
Executive producers include Alison Schapker, Jordan Goldberg, Mark Tobey, Kevin Lau, Monica Owusu-Breen, Matthew King, Scott Z. Burns, and Jon Spaihts (co-writer of the Dune films). The Herbert estate, represented by Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert, is also actively involved, ensuring the adaptation remains faithful to the legacy of Frank Herbert’s vision.
Series Relevance
By situating itself millennia before the known Dune timeline, Dune: Prophecy explores the philosophical and genetic origins of the Bene Gesserit’s power, themes of control, destiny, and survival that define the Dune mythos. Season 2 is expected to expand the scope of the Sisterhood’s rise, blending politics, mysticism, and the cosmic grandeur that has made Dune one of science fiction’s most enduring sagas.
