Will there be a Below Season 2, or has the Netflix horror series been cancelled as a limited series after one season?

Neither has happened so far. Below has not been renewed, and it hasn’t been cancelled either, as it was billed as a “limited series”. Star Josh Hartnett says he isn’t aware of any plans for more episodes, but he hasn’t ruled it out.

A limited series label doesn’t automatically close the door on more seasons. Whether a story continues often comes down to viewing figures and audience response.

The label also gives networks and producers a safety net: if the numbers don’t justify a longer run, the show can end as a complete story without being cancelled. It can also make a project easier to commit to for talent and creators, who sign on for a defined story rather than a multi-year run.

The question is being asked because Below started relatively strongly. It debuted October 8 and drew 17 million views through Sunday, October 11, a record for any Canadian Netflix debut. It also finished ahead of every other English-language TV title that week.

The series follows Calvin Penney (Hartnett), a Newfoundland fisherman who has to protect his loved ones and community from a dangerous sea creature while still carrying the weight of his father’s decades-old death. It runs six episodes, so the whole story can be watched in a single sitting. The cast includes Mackenzie Davis, Charlie Heaton, Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn and Rohan Campbell.

Hartnett was candid about where things stand in a recent interview with Mens Health, saying:

“The story works very well on its own. I don’t think there are any plans. I know [creator Jesse McKeown] has moved on to something else. All the actors have moved on to other things. I’ve moved on to other things.”

He also acknowledged how much viewership can change the picture for Below Season 2 renewal:

“If it becomes a massive hit, then there’s always room to imagine a future, and I would, without a doubt, love to go play Calvin again. For me, the door’s not closed, but it’s a limited series.”

For now, it seems Below will remain and one-and-done, but we’ll keep you updated should anything change over the coming months.
