A Different World has been renewed for a second season at Netflix, continuing the revival’s return to Hillman College following its September 24 debut.

The series follows Deborah Wayne, the free-spirited youngest daughter of original characters Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, as she navigates her freshman year at Hillman alongside a new generation of students.

That new class includes Rashida Duvall, a first-generation criminal justice major, Shaquille Johnson, a five-star athlete weighing his own legacy, Amir Rodale, a psych major more comfortable fixing others’ problems than his own, Hazel Henry, a small-town student working out her values outside the world she grew up in, and Kojo Achebe, a fashion entrepreneur finding the confidence to pursue his own path.

Season 1 performed well out of the gate, debuting at #4 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list with 4.2 million views and reaching the Top 10 in 15 countries. The revival also connected with audiences on the music side, with its opening credits theme performed by Brandy drawing more than 1.3 million streams globally.

Creator, Showrunner and Executive Producer Felicia Pride, noted:

“It’s so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience. We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. I am thrilled for our brilliant cast and our hard-working crew.”

Executive Producer and Director Debbie Allen, noted:

“YAY! HALLELUJAH! The people and NETFLIX have spoken. A Different World brought something everybody needed: joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and HEART! Thank you for getting us into the Top 10 worldwide! And now, gear up! We’re coming back at you with Season 2!!”

Vice President, Comedy Series, Netflix, Tracey Pakosta, noted:

“We are so excited to see how audiences around the world have embraced the next chapter of this beloved series. We believed in this incredible team from day one, and can’t wait to see what unfolds next year at Hillman College.”

Season 2 picks up after what’s described as a transformative summer for Deborah and her classmates, who return for sophomore year carrying a “new year, new me” mindset. That resolve is quickly tested, with the group facing the consequences of past decisions, uncertain futures, new relationships and bigger questions about purpose, all while getting pulled into new complications along the way.

A Different World Season 2 is slated to release in fall 2027 on Netflix.
