The Forsytes is moving full steam ahead at MASTERPIECE PBS, with production officially underway on a third season even before Season 2 has premiered. The announcement signals growing confidence in the period drama, which has quickly established itself as one of PBS’s standout costume series.
Produced by Mammoth Screen and commissioned by MASTERPIECE, the third season will shift the story beyond London society and into the glamorous world of the French Riviera. According to the newly released details, the upcoming episodes will follow the Forsyte family as they attempt to escape their mounting personal tensions during a luxurious Mediterranean holiday – only to discover that distance does little to resolve their conflicts.
The early production start reflects the strong reception to Season 1, which recently concluded its run on MASTERPIECE PBS in the United States. Critics responded positively to the adaptation’s blend of sweeping romance, family intrigue, and lavish production design, with many praising its modernized approach to classic literary material. That reception appears to have given PBS and its production partners confidence to continue expanding the series ahead of Season 2’s 2027 debut.
From an industry perspective, the rapid progression into Season 3 highlights the enduring popularity of prestige costume dramas. In recent years, period adaptations have remained one of public broadcasters’ most reliable genres, particularly when paired with recognizable literary source material. Shows that combine high production values with serialized family drama often perform well internationally, making them attractive long-term investments for networks and distributors alike.
Based on John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga novels, the series explores the complexities of wealth, class, and shifting social values during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Writer and executive producer Debbie Horsfield has reimagined the material with a more contemporary emotional lens, while still retaining the opulence and societal tension that define the original novels.
Season 3 will reportedly center on the family’s travels through Paris, the Italian countryside, and the French Riviera during the Belle Époque era. The Mediterranean setting is expected to introduce a different atmosphere from the previous seasons, replacing London’s formal social scene with sun-drenched glamour, romantic complications, and new interpersonal rivalries.
The upcoming season will also expand the cast with the addition of Gregg Sulkin and Gabriel Antunes, who join the returning ensemble in new roles tied to the evolving family drama. While specific character details remain under wraps, the production has teased fresh relationships, hidden secrets, and major turning points that could permanently alter the family dynamic.
Horsfield described the new season as a blend of intrigue, romance, and dramatic revelations set against the backdrop of the Riviera, emphasizing the contrast between the idyllic setting and the emotional turbulence facing the characters. Meanwhile, Mammoth Screen executive Damien Timmer highlighted the shift in scenery as an opportunity to broaden the world of the series, taking the Forsytes beyond their familiar social circles and into a more expansive European setting.
The move to begin production on Season 3 before Season 2 airs also demonstrates increasing confidence in audience retention. Rather than waiting to gauge future interest, PBS appears committed to establishing The Forsytes as a long-term prestige franchise within its scripted lineup. This approach helps maintain production continuity while ensuring shorter gaps between seasons, an increasingly important factor in serialized television.
For viewers, the announcement offers reassurance that the story will continue to expand well beyond its initial run. With multiple seasons already in motion, the series is positioning itself as a major ongoing adaptation rather than a limited literary event.
The Forsytes Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in 2027 on MASTERPIECE PBS in the U.S. and on Channel 5 in the U.K., while Season 3 is currently in production.
