Sweet Magnolias Cancelled By Netflix – No Season 6

Sweet Magnolias has been cancelled by Netflix after five seasons. The news comes three months after the romantic drama released its now-final 10-episode run.

The series had a steady run on the streaming service, airing 50 episodes total since its 2020 debut. It never broke out as one of Netflix’s biggest hits, but it built a loyal audience that stuck with it across five seasons, a rarer feat for a streaming drama that isn’t part of a larger franchise.

Season 5 held up reasonably well by that standard. It drew 2.8 million views in its opening week, landing at #4 on Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 list for English-language series.

There had reportedly been some consideration given to bringing the series back for a sixth and final season before Netflix ultimately passed. Part of that decision appears tied to a separate project in development from Sweet Magnolias executive producer and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, working alongside star JoAnna Garcia Swisher. With both attached to the new show, Netflix’s focus seems to have shifted there rather than extending Sweet Magnolias further.

Based on the novel series by Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias centers on three lifelong best friends in the small town of Serenity, South Carolina. Known collectively as the Sweet Magnolias, the women lean on each other through the demands of career, family and relationships, with the show splitting time between their personal struggles and the tight-knit community around them.

The source material gave the series a built-in structure and years of story to draw from, which likely contributed to its ability to sustain five seasons on a straightforward, character-driven premise.

Garcia Swisher led the cast throughout the show’s run, with the ensemble built around the friendship at the show’s center staying largely consistent across its five seasons, a stability that likely helped the show retain its audience even without major breakout moments.

Sweet Magnolias Season 6 will not be shopped to other platforms or networks, closing the door on the series after its fifth season and leaving its ending intact as the final word on the Serenity storyline.
