Chef’s Table has two new seasons on the way, Chef’s Table: Icons and Chef’s Table: Desserts, marking the franchise’s return after more than a year since its most recent installment, Legends.

The docuseries has built its run around profiling individual chefs, with each episode offering a closer look at a different chef’s background, philosophy and approach to food. The format has stayed consistent across its various seasons and spinoffs, using each chef’s personal story as the entry point into their cooking.

Icons (Season 8) shifts the focus toward chefs whose influence extends beyond their own restaurants. The season looks at chefs who built lasting institutions rather than single successes, examining what it takes to reach the top of the culinary world and, just as importantly, what it takes to stay there through reinvention and discipline over time.

Desserts (Season 9), meanwhile, narrows in on pastry and dessert work specifically, spotlighting chefs known for inventive approaches to sweets and confectionery from around the world. It’s a more specialized entry for the franchise, giving an entire season over to a single culinary category rather than chefs working across full menus.

Creator, Director, Executive Producer David Gelb, noted:

“‘Chef’s Table’ has always been about more than food, it’s about the personal journey of the chefs who tell stories with their cuisine, the obsession, discipline, and heart that goes into every night of service in their kitchens and dining rooms. For Desserts and Icons, these stories were so exciting to me that I decided to take the camera and direct all eight episodes myself, and I’ve found myself profoundly moved by the experience of filming on the most intimate level with these chefs. After 10 years, our filmmaking team continues to strive to elevate ‘Chef’s Table’ to an even higher level, just like our chefs do in their restaurants every day.”

Gelb directing all eight episodes himself across both seasons marks a shift for the franchise, which has typically spread directing duties across its filmmaking team.

Icons and Desserts are expected to release in 2027 and 2028, respectively, on Netflix.
