Prime Video is bringing back Jury Duty for a third season, continuing the unconventional hidden-camera comedy after its successful transition from Freevee to the streaming platform. The renewal was announced during Amazon’s upfront presentation and arrives roughly a month after the show concluded its second season.

The pickup further solidifies Jury Duty as one of Amazon’s more creatively distinctive comedy properties. What initially began as a quirky experimental concept on the now-defunct Amazon Freevee has evolved into a streaming franchise capable of reinventing itself from season to season while maintaining audience interest.

The original 2023 season became an unexpected breakout thanks to its unusual premise and strong word-of-mouth response. The series followed an ordinary juror unknowingly participating in a completely staged trial surrounded by actors, with the entire courtroom environment designed as an elaborate improvisational comedy experiment. Much of the attention centered on James Marsden’s exaggerated fictionalized version of himself, which became one of the season’s defining comedic elements.

Following the shutdown of Freevee as a standalone platform, Amazon shifted the series to Prime Video for Season 2, where the concept was reimagined under the subtitle Company Retreat. Rather than repeating the courtroom setting, the second installment placed an unsuspecting new employee into a fabricated corporate retreat scenario populated entirely by actors.

That anthology-style reinvention appears to have been key to the show’s longevity. Instead of forcing the same gimmick into repetitive territory, Jury Duty has treated each season as a standalone social experiment, allowing the format to evolve while preserving its core hidden-camera structure.

From an industry perspective, the series reflects the growing appetite for hybrid comedy formats that blur scripted and unscripted storytelling. In an era where traditional sitcoms face increasing competition from short-form digital humor and reality programming, Jury Duty stands out by combining improvisation, social awkwardness, and emotional sincerity into something that feels relatively fresh within mainstream streaming comedy.

The renewal also highlights how streaming platforms continue searching for lower-cost scripted alternatives that can generate strong cultural conversation. While massive franchise dramas dominate headlines, smaller-scale comedies with distinctive hooks often perform well through social media clips, audience recommendations, and repeat viewing.

Importantly, Jury Duty has managed to avoid the cynicism that can sometimes plague prank or hidden-camera television. Much of its appeal stems from the surprisingly genuine emotional connections formed between the unsuspecting participant and the surrounding cast, giving the series a warmth that separates it from more exploitative reality concepts.

The anthology approach also opens the door for endless thematic possibilities moving forward. Whether the next season explores another workplace scenario, a social event, or an entirely different environment, the format’s flexibility gives the creative team room to continually reinvent the experiment.

For Prime Video, renewing Jury Duty represents another example of the platform investing in recognizable but unconventional comedy programming to complement its larger franchise offerings. The show may not command blockbuster-level viewership, but its cultural footprint and originality have made it a valuable addition to Amazon’s comedy slate.

Jury Duty Season 3 is slated to release in 2027 on Prime Video.
