ABC has renewed R.J. Decker for a second season, confirming the future of the freshman private-eye drama and completing an unusually stable renewal cycle for the network. The series had been the final scripted ABC show still awaiting a decision for the 2026-2027 season, making its pickup the last major piece of the network’s scripted lineup puzzle.
With the renewal, ABC will now bring back all 10 of its current scripted series next season – a rare feat in modern broadcast television. In fact, it marks the first time since at least 2012 that the network has avoided cancelling a single scripted show. At a time when networks are routinely trimming lineups amid shifting viewing habits and rising production costs, the decision underscores just how strong ABC’s overall slate has become.
The network has already renewed key franchises and established hits including 911, 911: Nashville, Abbott Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, High Potential, The Rookie, Scrubs, Shifting Gears, and Will Trent. The pickup for R.J. Decker effectively caps off a season defined more by continuity than overhaul.
ABC’s confidence in the drama appears tied to its steady ratings performance during the spring. According to available multiplatform data, the March 3 premiere accumulated more than 15 million viewers over five weeks of viewing, while its seven-day linear average landed just under five million viewers. That placed it roughly in line with returning procedural The Rookie and freshman spinoff 911: Nashville. Streaming likely pushed those numbers even higher, reinforcing the growing importance of delayed and digital viewing in renewal decisions.
The series stars Scott Speedman as R.J. Decker, a disgraced former photojournalist and ex-con who reinvents himself as a private investigator in South Florida. Inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy, the show blends eccentric crime storytelling with a character-driven emotional core, leaning into the colorful unpredictability often associated with Hiaasen’s work.
As Decker takes on increasingly strange and dangerous cases, he finds himself surrounded by a complicated network of allies and adversaries, including figures tied to both his personal past and professional future. The Florida setting adds a distinct atmosphere to the series, helping it stand apart from more conventional procedurals.
Supporting cast members include Jaina Lee Ortiz, Bevin Bru, Kevin Rankin, and Adelaide Clemens. Behind the scenes, the adaptation comes from Rob Doherty, best known for Elementary, who serves as showrunner and executive producer.
