BritBox has renewed Time for Season 3, with the new chapter moving the drama into a young offenders’ institution. The three-part series will be led by David Tennant as Prison Officer Bailey, with Siobhan Finneran reprising her role as prison chaplain Marie-Louise. Written by Jimmy McGovern and Samuel Bailey, the season begins filming in Belfast and is produced by BBC Studios Fiction in co-production with BritBox.

Season 3 examines the emotional and systemic weight of incarcerating teenagers, following both the staff who oversee them and the young offenders grappling with the first weeks of confinement. Marie-Louise arrives at the facility having lost her faith and is quickly at odds with Bailey after a tragedy inside the institution. As Bailey wrestles with guilt over what he knows, two teens, Peter and James, face their own crises—one burdened by a violent act, the other by family loyalty and an innocent man’s death. Their tentative friendship offers a fragile path toward change, even as the environment around them becomes increasingly volatile.

Series creator Jimmy McGovern said:

“Siobhan Finneran is back! And we’ve got a wonderful leading man in David Tennant… I think it’s going to be wonderful.”

Andrew Morrissey, Executive Producer for BBC Studios Fiction, added:

“Once we started the research, we knew there were stories that demanded to be told.”

BritBox President Robert Schildhouse noted that the streamer is “excited to partner with the BBC on this next chapter,” while BBC Drama Director Lindsay Salt called McGovern “a master at creating brave, thought-provoking dramas.”

Time Season 3 will premiere in 2026 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with BritBox carrying the series in North America.
