About Death in Paradise
Did You Know?
Where Is “Death in Paradise” Filmed?
While Saint Marie is fictional, the show is filmed on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. The town of Deshaies stands in for the island’s capital, Honoré, with the church hall doubling as the police station and Catherine’s Bar built right on the beachfront.
How Long Does Filming Take?
Each season shoots over roughly six months, typically from May to November. The cast and crew stay at the Langley Resort Fort Royal, which also features in the series.
What Happens to the Sets Between Seasons?
The famous beach shack and Catherine’s Bar are temporary structures – dismantled each year after filming to protect them from tropical storms.
Why Does It Air During Winter?
The show films months in advance so that its sun-soaked episodes air during the UK’s coldest months, offering viewers a welcome dose of warmth and escapism.
Blending comedy, drama and fiendishly clever murders, as well as a joyous soundtrack of reggae, ska and dancehall music, Death in Paradise has been a mainstay of British television for the last ten years. In that time, four fish-out-of-water detectives have made the fictional island of Saint Marie their home, working with a lively and passionate team of local officers and characters to solve baffling murders that Agatha Christie would have been proud of. A host of famous British actors have appeared in the show in the 99 episodes since it began in 2011, and many more have become stars since their appearance in it.
