Peacock has cancelled The Copenhagen Test after just one season, bringing an early end to the sci-fi espionage thriller. The decision comes three and a half months after the series released its full eight-episode debut on December 27, 2025, marking a swift conclusion for a show that had initially generated interest but struggled to maintain momentum.

The cancellation appears to be largely driven by viewership performance. While The Copenhagen Test managed to break into Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming originals chart during its first week – earning the number 10 spot with 373 million minutes viewed – it failed to sustain that level of engagement in the weeks that followed. In today’s streaming environment, where platforms closely monitor ongoing audience retention and completion rates, a strong debut is rarely enough on its own. Without consistent viewership growth or staying power, even critically well-received series can face cancellation.

Critically, the show performed reasonably well, holding a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews generally praised its premise and lead performance, though some noted uneven pacing and narrative complexity. However, positive reception alone is rarely sufficient to guarantee renewal, particularly for high-concept dramas that likely come with higher production costs.

The cancellation also reflects a broader industry trend in streaming, where platforms are becoming increasingly selective about which shows they continue. As competition intensifies and budgets tighten, services like Peacock are prioritizing series that can deliver both strong initial numbers and sustained audience engagement. Mid-tier performers – especially those that don’t break out internationally or generate significant buzz – are more vulnerable than ever, even if they show creative promise.

The Copenhagen Test starred Simu Liu as Alexander Hale, a first-generation Chinese-American intelligence analyst caught in an extraordinary and dangerous situation. The story followed Hale after he discovers that his brain has been hacked, allowing unknown adversaries to see and hear everything he experiences. This invasive breach forces him into a high-stakes game of deception, as he attempts to uncover the perpetrators while navigating suspicion from his own agency.

The series blended elements of science fiction with traditional spy thriller conventions, creating a tense narrative centered on surveillance, identity, and trust. Its premise – requiring the protagonist to constantly “perform” under the threat of being watched – offered a unique twist on the genre, though its complexity may have limited its broader appeal.

For viewers, the cancellation means the story will remain unresolved, with no second season planned to continue or conclude its narrative. This outcome is increasingly common in the streaming era, where shows are often judged quickly based on performance metrics. While some series find a second life on other platforms, there has been no indication that The Copenhagen Test Season 2 will be shopped elsewhere.

All eight episodes of The Copenhagen Test Season 1 remain available to stream on Peacock.
