Genre Anime
Anime refers to animated television series produced in Japan, spanning a wide range of genres including action, drama, fantasy, and science fiction. Unlike Western animation, anime is often characterized by serialized storytelling, distinctive visual styles, and adaptations from manga, light novels, or original concepts developed within the Japanese entertainment industry.
Renewal and continuation decisions for anime series follow a different model compared to traditional television. Rather than ongoing seasonal renewals, many anime are produced in planned arcs or split seasons (“cours”), with future installments depending on factors such as source material availability, production schedules, and overall audience demand.
Anime production is typically managed by committees involving studios, publishers, and distributors, meaning decisions are influenced by merchandising potential, international licensing, and franchise performance as well as viewership. As a result, some series return after long gaps, while others conclude after a single run despite strong popularity.
The genre’s global reach has expanded significantly through streaming platforms, which now play a major role in distribution and audience growth outside Japan.
