Apple TV+ is keeping Margo’s Got Money Troubles in business. The streamer has renewed the critically acclaimed comedy-drama for a second season ahead of its Season 1 finale, which premieres globally on May 20, 2026.
The renewal continues Apple’s recent streak of investing heavily in prestige-driven dramedies anchored by major creative talent. Led by Elle Fanning and executive produced by Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer, the series quickly emerged as one of the platform’s standout new originals following its debut earlier this year.
Based on the bestselling novel by Rufi Thorpe and adapted for television by David E. Kelley, the show has earned widespread critical praise for its blend of emotional honesty, dark humor, and character-driven storytelling. Since premiering on Apple TV+, the series has been described by critics as one of the year’s best new dramas, with particular attention paid to the performances of its ensemble cast.
The story centers on Margo, played by Fanning, a struggling young woman trying to survive after becoming a single mother while facing mounting financial pressure and uncertain career prospects. The daughter of a former Hooters waitress and an ex-professional wrestler, Margo navigates adulthood, motherhood, and economic instability with a mix of desperation, resilience, and chaotic improvisation.
That grounded emotional core appears to be a major reason the show connected so strongly with audiences and critics alike. While the premise carries comedic elements, Margo’s Got Money Troubles distinguishes itself through its exploration of economic anxiety, generational dysfunction, and personal reinvention in modern America.
Fanning reflected on the experience of bringing the character to life while celebrating the renewal.
“Embarking on the adventure of bringing Margo to the screen has been one of the greatest joys of my life,” she said in a statement. “Having the opportunity to bring more of Margo’s troubles, creativity, fearless spirit and authenticity to audiences with a second season makes me incredibly happy and excited.”
David E. Kelley, one of television’s most prolific creators, also emphasized the emotional pull of the source material.
“I fell in love with Rufi’s world and unpredictable characters, and it’s been rewarding to see audiences embrace this series,” Kelley said.
The renewal highlights Apple TV+’s continued strategy of building prestige programming around recognizable stars and acclaimed creators rather than pursuing sheer volume. Unlike larger streaming competitors that often cycle quickly through original content, Apple has increasingly prioritized curated projects with awards potential and long-term brand value.
From an industry perspective, Margo’s Got Money Troubles also reflects the growing popularity of dramedies centered on flawed but relatable protagonists navigating economic and emotional instability. Similar to other modern prestige comedies, the show balances humor with deeply personal subject matter, creating a tone that resonates particularly well with streaming audiences seeking character-focused storytelling.
The supporting ensemble has also become a major draw for the series. Alongside Fanning, Pfeiffer, and Kidman, the cast includes Nick Offerman, Marcia Gay Harden, Greg Kinnear, and Michael Angarano. Critics have frequently singled out the cast chemistry and layered performances as key strengths of the show.
Season 2 will also bring some behind-the-scenes evolution, with Eva Anderson stepping in as co-showrunner alongside Kelley.
Produced by A24, the series continues Apple’s growing collaboration with the acclaimed studio, which has become one of the industry’s most recognizable prestige-content brands across both film and television.
For viewers, the renewal means Margo’s complicated journey is far from over. Given the unresolved family tensions, financial struggles, and emotional fallout still unfolding as Season 1 approaches its finale, the second season appears poised to expand the story’s emotional and comedic scope even further.
Margo’s Got Money Troubles Season 1 finale releases May 20, 2026 on Apple TV+, with Season 2 now in development for a 2027 premiere window.
