NBC has renewed Law & Order for a 26th season, extending the lifespan of one of television’s most enduring franchises. The pickup arrives with just one episode remaining in the procedural drama’s current 25th season and confirms that the flagship series will remain a core part of NBC’s lineup for at least another year.
Importantly, Season 26 is not currently being designated as the show’s final chapter.
Originally created by Dick Wolf, Law & Order first premiered in 1990 and became one of the defining dramas of modern television. Across its original run, the series aired 456 episodes over 20 seasons before NBC cancelled it in 2010. More than a decade later, the network revived the show in 2022, bringing it back for Season 21 and reestablishing the original series within the broader Law & Order universe.
The revival initially returned as a modest midseason entry with a shorter 10-episode run, but NBC quickly expanded its commitment after the comeback proved stable enough to sustain a full-season presence. Though Season 23 was shortened by the industry-wide writers strike, the series has since returned to more traditional episode counts, with Seasons 24 and 25 delivering near-standard broadcast runs.
One of the show’s lasting strengths has been its format. Each episode traditionally follows a two-part structure, beginning with the police investigation of a crime before shifting to the legal prosecution in court. That procedural blueprint became enormously influential over the decades and helped establish the franchise as a television institution.
The renewal comes during a transitional moment for broadcast television, particularly for veteran procedural dramas. As production costs continue to rise and advertising models evolve, networks have increasingly implemented budget reductions on long-running series. NBC’s collection of Dick Wolf dramas – including Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, and the Chicago franchise – has reportedly undergone similar financial adjustments in recent years, often involving cast negotiations, episode guarantees, and scheduling efficiencies.
Still, the fact that NBC opted to renew Law & Order rather than scale back the franchise further speaks to the continued value of recognizable procedural brands. Shows like Law & Order remain highly dependable performers thanks to their syndication strength, streaming appeal, and broad audience familiarity. Even in an era dominated by streaming originals, procedural dramas continue to attract consistent viewership on both linear television and digital platforms.
The renewal is also particularly notable following NBC’s recent cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime, which ended after five seasons. That move had raised questions about the broader future of the franchise, but the pickups for both Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU indicate that NBC still sees strong long-term value in the core series.
For viewers, Season 26 means more investigations, courtroom battles, and the familiar formula that has defined the series for over three decades. While production changes may occur behind the scenes, NBC’s decision confirms that the flagship drama remains an important piece of the network’s schedule moving forward.
Law & Order Season 26 is slated to premiere in fall 2026 on NBC.
