ITV has renewed its hit detective drama Grace for a seventh season, confirming the return of John Simm as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace. The announcement follows the explosive conclusion of Season 6, which left viewers with major unanswered questions after a dramatic kidnapping at the wedding of Roy Grace and Cleo Morey.
The renewal comes on the heels of another strong performance for the Brighton-set crime drama, which continues to rank among ITV’s most reliable scripted hits. Season 6 delivered the network’s biggest overnight drama audience of the year for its premiere episode, later consolidating to 5.7 million viewers. Beyond linear viewing, the series has also seen significant traction on ITVX, where all six seasons have remained within the platform’s top 40 most-watched titles, with multiple entries reaching the top 10. In total, Grace has generated more than 16.6 million views, including 11 million streams in the past year alone.
These figures highlight why ITV has continued to invest in the series as a core part of its drama lineup. In an era where broadcasters are increasingly selective with renewals, consistent audience engagement – both on traditional broadcast and streaming platforms – is a key factor. Grace has proven its ability to deliver on both fronts, making it a dependable performer within ITV’s schedule.
The show’s success also reflects a broader trend in British television, where crime dramas based on established literary properties continue to thrive. Adaptations of bestselling novels often come with built-in audiences and long-term narrative potential, allowing networks to sustain multi-season runs. In this case, Grace draws from the popular Roy Grace book series by Peter James, providing a steady pipeline of source material for future episodes.
Season 7 will pick up directly from the high-stakes events of the previous finale, with the kidnapping of Cleo Morey expected to play a central role in the unfolding story. ITV has confirmed that the new season will consist of four feature-length episodes, each based on characters and storylines from James’ novels. Among the titles already revealed are When You Are Dead and Picture You Dead, with additional adaptations to be announced as development continues.
Returning alongside Simm are key cast members, including Richie Campbell as DI Glenn Branson and Zoë Tapper as Cleo Morey, whose fate remains uncertain following the Season 6 cliffhanger. Supporting players Laura Elphinstone and Brad Morrison are also set to reprise their roles, ensuring continuity as the series moves into its next chapter.
Speaking about the show’s longevity, Simm expressed surprise at how far the series has come, noting that its continued success is largely due to the strength of its writing and production team. His comments reflect a sentiment often seen in long-running dramas: sustained quality and a cohesive creative vision are essential to maintaining both audience interest and cast commitment.
ITV executives have similarly emphasized the show’s importance within their lineup, describing it as a cornerstone of the network’s drama output. The combination of compelling storytelling, a strong central performance, and a recognizable literary foundation has allowed Grace to stand out in a crowded genre.
For viewers, the Season 7 renewal offers reassurance that the story will continue, particularly after the unresolved cliffhanger that closed out the previous season. With higher stakes and more personal consequences for its central characters, the upcoming episodes are expected to deliver both emotional depth and the intricate investigations that have defined the series.
Grace Season 7 is expected to premiere first on ITV in 2027 (followed later in the U.S. on BritBox), with previous seasons currently available to stream on ITVX.
