Prime Video has cancelled Ride or Die after one season. The news arrives two months after the action comedy’s release and comes as something of a surprise, given the show’s strong performance and largely positive reception from both critics and viewers.

The series follows longtime best friends Debbie Claybourne and Judith Burton, who believe they know everything about each other until Judith is revealed to be an international assassin. When a figure from Judith’s past resurfaces and a job goes wrong, the two are forced to go on the run together, leading to a chase across Europe with law enforcement, trained assassins and assorted criminals in pursuit.

Ride or Die performed well by most available measures. It reached No. 1 in daily U.S. rankings shortly after release, surpassing even the big-budget film Masters of the Universe during that stretch. On Luminate’s weekly U.S. charts, it logged 927,000 views in its first two days, more than double what Elle drew in its first two days and nearly four times Off Campus‘ opening numbers from earlier in the year. It held the top spot in U.S. minutes watched through its first full week and continued that pace into its third week.

The show’s momentum carried over to Nielsen’s Weekly Top 10 as well. It debuted at No. 8 on the overall streaming chart and No. 3 among original series, with 869 million minutes viewed in its first week, then climbed to No. 4 overall and No. 2 among streaming originals in its second week with 922 million minutes. Over its first 14 days, it’s said to rank as Prime Video’s most-watched new scripted series in the U.S. across the past year. Critically, the show also performed well, holding a 96% score with critics and 85% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ride or Die was one of two series centered on 50-something female friendships to launch in July with similarly strong numbers and reviews. The other, Peacock’s The Five Star Weekend, was renewed for a second season, making Ride or Die‘s cancellation stand out further by comparison.

The reasoning behind the decision hasn’t been officially confirmed, but industry sourcing points to the show’s core audience, women in their 50s, as a possible factor, even though the series also drew younger viewers and male audiences.

The thinking, as it’s been described, is that many women in that demographic already subscribe to Amazon Prime for shopping, meaning a series aimed at them wouldn’t necessarily drive new sign-ups in the way Amazon looks for from originals.

Ride of Die Season 1 ended on several cliffhangers that had set up ongoing storylines for a second season.

Offering some hope to fans, Paramount Television Studios, the lead studio behind the series, is now shopping Ride or Die Season 2 to other outlets.
