HBO has taken a key step on Big Little Lies Season 3, hiring Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Francesca Sloane to write the first episode of the new installment, currently in development.

Sloane will also executive produce with series creator David E. Kelley and stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman as the project advances through early scripting.

The move arrives as part of Sloane’s exclusive two-year overall deal with HBO. She shifts from Amazon MGM Studios, where she has been under overall agreements since 2020 and co-created Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Donald Glover. That series’ previously ordered second season has been delayed.

Big Little Lies Season 3 is currently targeting a late 2026 or 2027 premiere window.
